La Barrosa: eight kilometres of fine sand
La Barrosa is one of the longest and most highly rated beaches in Andalusia. It starts by the Torre del Puerco on the Conil boundary and runs to the old village of Sancti Petri. Fine sand, a very gentle slope and real width even at high tide.
The first section, along the resort, has a promenade, beach bars, lifeguards and accessible entry points: the easiest with children. Beyond the Loma del Puerco the beach turns wilder, backed by dunes and pine woods, and stays noticeably emptier in summer.
Behind the beach lies the Pinar de la Barrosa, with trails, a cycle path and shade — ideal for a run or a walk early on, before the sun gets going.
Sancti Petri and watersports
The village of Sancti Petri is a former tuna-fishing settlement turned marina, and the launch point for most of the area’s water activity. Boat trips leave from here to the Castillo de Sancti Petri, the fortress on an islet where tradition placed the temple of Hercules Gaditanus.
The Sancti Petri channel, a sheltered tidal arm inside the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park, is where paddleboarding, kayaking and the sailing schools concentrate: flat water, little traffic, and herons and flamingos in the surrounding salt pans.
Out on the open beach, when the levante blows, La Barrosa and its surroundings are a regular kitesurfing and windsurfing spot.
Golf, old town and food
Novo Sancti Petri brings together several 18-hole courses among pine woods a few metres from the sea, playable year-round thanks to the mild Cádiz winter. It is one reason Chiclana keeps its occupancy outside summer.
The town centre sits about 7 km inland from the beach and keeps its Andalusian character: the church of San Juan Bautista, the covered market, and a winemaking tradition tied to the Marco de Jerez, with cellars still producing local wine.
On the table, the bay’s fish rules: fried pescaíto, estuary-raised sea bass and bream, and sea anemones and urchins in season.
Getting there and when to go
Chiclana is 25 km from the city of Cádiz and about 45 km from Jerez airport (XRY), a little over half an hour on the A-48. Seville (SVQ) is roughly 125 km away. The nearest train station is San Fernando, 15 km away, with commuter services to Cádiz.
Peak season is July and August. June and September give you the same beach with fewer people and better rates; from October to May the destination shifts towards golf, walking in the pine forest and weekend breaks.
